Erasmus+ Supports Over 1.2 Million Learners and Educators in 2022, New Report Reveals

30 November 2023 by Mahir Kilic in Uncategorized

Brussels, 30 November 2023 – The EU’s flagship programme for education, training, youth, and sport, Erasmus+, supported nearly 26,000 projects in 2022, benefiting over 73,000 organisations across Europe and beyond. According to the 2022 Erasmus+ Annual Report presented at the 6th European Education Summit, the programme provided learning mobility opportunities to more than 1.2 million students, teachers, trainers, youth workers, and young people.

The report highlights the programme’s continued success, achieving high participation rates and effective use of its resources. With a significantly increased budget of €26.2 billion for 2021–2027—almost double that of the previous funding cycle—Erasmus+ emphasizes social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and fostering democratic participation.

Key Achievements in 2022

  • Mobility Opportunities Restored: Learner and staff mobility, the programme’s core activity, returned to pre-pandemic levels, significantly benefiting participants’ educational, social, personal, and professional development while enhancing their sense of European identity.
  • Inclusivity at the Forefront: In 2022, Erasmus+ provided opportunities for 134,000 individuals with fewer resources, including those with disabilities, migrants, and citizens from remote or socio-economically disadvantaged areas.
  • Environmental and Digital Initiatives:
    • Over 1,300 cooperation projects with a total budget of €592 million supported environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change.
    • More than 1,650 projects with funding of €744 million focused on advancing the digital transformation of education, aligned with the Digital Education Action Plan.
  • Democratic Engagement: Approximately €340 million was allocated to 1,200 projects aimed at promoting democratic participation and strengthening European identity and values.

A Growing Legacy

Since its inception in 1987, Erasmus+ has provided over 14 million people with opportunities to study, train, work, or volunteer abroad. The programme’s inclusivity and international reach have made it one of the EU’s most recognisable and impactful initiatives.

In response to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Erasmus+ took swift action to support Ukrainian students, educators, and institutions. This included providing Ukrainian learners with half a million textbooks and ensuring ongoing mobility opportunities for those affected.

Future Outlook

The European Commission is preparing a comprehensive evaluation of Erasmus+, with findings expected by the end of 2024. These insights will help shape the future of the programme after 2027.

The programme’s integration of DiscoverEU has also proven successful, with over 230,000 young people applying for 83,000 travel passes in 2022, underscoring the initiative’s popularity and relevance for Europe’s youth.

With its substantial budget and expanding focus, Erasmus+ is set to continue empowering millions of learners, fostering European unity, and driving innovation in education, training, and youth engagement across the continent.
